Special Art Day! Thurs. 9-27

Next week we've got a very special day planned. First of all, it's going to be on Thursday, at Rick and Catherine's house. Catherine got some mask-making material, and we can all make masks of our faces (or other body parts). Catherine has the day off, so we can start assembling any time after 3:30. This should be a particularly fun time, and I hope everyone can go.

This is because the floors are gonna be torn up at our house.

7-10: Candles

Laura is bringing stuff to make candles with. She will show us a technique where you whip the wax and frost the parafin slabs.

I again encourage bathing suits so you can take a refreshing dip if you are so inclined.

7-3 Art Day

Hi gang,

We're on for art day today, but it's going to be HOT I think, so please make sure to bring your suit! The cool pool is nice and refreshing.

I was thinking we might do painting or drawing today. I'm also open to any thoughts for future projects.

Welding

Welding at Rick C's house was very fun and educational. First we watched the video of how to use the welder, then we tried it out. It's hard at first! But we made some good welds. Rick and I made a big Rune. And I'm afraid we stayed WAY too long. Sorry guys. I was shocked when I realized how late it was. Next time, kick me out!

This coming week is... open projects I think. I have a few things to finish up. We'll do it at our house again. I suggest bringing your suit so we can hop in the pool to cool off.

Today's Projects

Don't forget that Art Day is at Rick C's house today. We'll be doing mig welding. Rick J gave Mr. C some $$ for some basic metal stock, so there will be enough for everyone to play around with.

Tie dye

Last Art Day, we did tie dye. Laura brought buckets and dye, and we used rubberbands to make the ties. Rick, Rick C, Bill, Laura, and I all made shirts. We took pics, and I'll upload them later. We had a bit of a thunderstorm (our Fair rain, one week late) but we made do. It was Bill Beebe's bd and we had cupcakes. I grilled ribs.

Next Art Day will be at Rick C's house, and we'll do welding. Details to follow.

Past projects

I wanted to "catch up" by discussing projects we have worked on so far:

Of course, our Puzzle Show art pieces were a lot of fun this year. I did Krokopelli in Huichol style yarn art. Rick did a stream, complete with rocks and sand. Catherine did a print of cats. Rick C. did an evil cat in papier mache. Laura did a piece with weaving over painting and one with her wax paper art. Bill did a dragon sculpted from copper wire. All of them were awesome.

Then we did some acrylic painting and wax papermaking. I used faux techniques to paint my favorite wooden tray, and Laura made panels for her kitchen door.

Last week we did papier mache with the materials that Rick C had left over from his puzzle piece. I worked on a giraffe; Catherine did a "quadraped, probably herbivorous"; and our special guest, Kieri (Catherine's daughter) did a pig. Bill sketched a cartoon.

Yesterday, Rick C. brought over the transfer paper he bought so we could practice doing decal transfers. He baked three photo images onto some glass jars just as an experiment. It worked pretty well even though we had a little mix up on the baking time. Catherine worked on her sculpture, and I laquered my tray and beer holder. Rick and Bill designed the Molybdenum Gimbal. And of course, we can't have any Amberglen gathering without our liquid master!

Rick C. is gonna host a welding session for us, either next week (June 5) or the week after. Stay tuned for details.

As always, folks are welcome to work on any projects they want, or even just come and drink beer with us.
